African Shortbread (Butter Biscuits)

Makes: 20–24 biscuits
Ingredients
– 2½ cups all-purpose flour
– 1 cup butter or margarine (room temperature)
– ¾ cup powdered sugar (icing sugar)
– ¼ tsp salt
– ½ tsp nutmeg (optional)
– 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
Method
- Cream butter and powdered sugar until smooth and fluffy.
2. Add vanilla extract and nutmeg if using.
3. Gradually add flour and salt. Mix until a soft dough forms.
4. Shape dough into balls or flatten slightly. Mark with fork if desired.
5. Preheat oven to 170°C (340°F). Bake for 15–18 minutes until edges are lightly golden.
6. Remove from oven and cool completely before serving.
